Web Publishing.

Thanks to this (and every weeks) lecture being available for me to watch via my iPhone, I have been able to consume it in tasty bite sized chunks, rather than wolfing down the entire meal in one stomach ache inducing go.

Traditionally we have all thought of publishing as material things like books, magazines etc, but due to the electronic age we live in, a lot of this information is now floating around in that crazy and wild world of ‘cyber space’ (Do we even use that term anymore??)  Anyway, this week we looked at how information like this, or our own content, can be published to the world wide web.  As stated on the “UC Web Design and Production” blog, this lecture was indeed ‘light on theory, heave on the ‘how to’ and “Yes”, that’s the way I like it :)

The lecture covered ideas such as Name servers and Web servers and how a user sitting at their computer sends a request out into the www and how they then receive their requested information without really thinking about the process itself.

As ‘managers’, if you will, of web sites, we need to be aware about what is going on in the background.  Information does not simply ‘magically appear’ on the internet, and we learnt about the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) process of taking our content and ‘publishing’ it to a web hosting site.  Then, once we have our own URL or ‘domain name’ it all ties together nicely and information, be in pictures, music, text etc goes from living inside our heads, to being seen by as many like minded individuals that care to ‘look it up’.

This of course is at the ‘end of the day’, and for right now, I think I need to figure how to get my design draft from being a picture, to an actual working web page, THEN Ill worry about looking at web hosting, domain names and FTP Clients :)PEACE!
